However, most of the 8-bit vs 12-bit screenshots promoted by the major vendors are also shown at reduced bandwidth. At full bandwidth (1GHz or more), a 12-bit oscilloscope has only a marginal advantage over an 8-bit one even in regular non-hi-res mode, and probing can make it perform worse.Joel Avruninhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07396200850597065455noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1565037239206599239.post-78497467842176385352013-02-21T14:59:51.368-05:002013-02-21T14:59:51.368-05:00Hires increases no. of bits(software) but it will ...Hires increases no. of bits(software) but it will reduces the scope's BW ( some high frequency component will be filtered out). You mention an interesting point which I pondered when I wrote the speech. I actually considered the use of the word "autocratic" for quite awhile, substituting various other words, but always coming back to it. I even queried my friends on social media to help me find a term that meant "dictatorial" but did not seem negative. My searched for a synonym that did not have the connotation of "unlikable" and "harsh" came up empty. However, just because autocratic may be associated with being harsh, an autocrat need not be unlikable. A beloved monarch who makes all decisions for a country himself can be far friendlier than an elected official. Autocratic merely refers to the accumulation of decision making power within a central authority. By definition, an autocratic leader would not be using his power to motivate independence in his employees because he would be of the mindset that centralized authority was the only way to run his company. A harsh or unlikable leader certainly might try to cultivate independence, but then he would not be called autocratic.

As for Steve Jobs, I cannot speak with certainty because I did not work with the man. I used him as a well known example that would make the point I wanted to make in a language common to the audience. My understanding was based on the writings of Adam Lashinsky and Walter Isaacson. A more balanced speech would have said "the reported management style of Steve Jobs".Joel Avruninhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07396200850597065455noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1565037239206599239.post-54484326801123317992013-02-10T15:09:33.293-05:002013-02-10T15:09:33.293-05:00This is a great graduation address. I would have been pleasantly surprised to hear you speak at any graduation ceremony that I've ever attended. Make sure to invite me to your next graduation :).

Since your speech was so substantive, it gives me the opportunity to quibble with one of your points. You seem to equate "autocratic" and perhaps even "unlikable" with "over-controlling". I can think of a couple of examples where these don't go together.

Many books that I've read on wars involving the US military (Stephen Ambrose's D-Day comes to mind as one) discuss the advantage that American troops had over their enemies because their field commanders were given the latitude and had the skills to innovate. The military is by necessity quite autocratic. Successful sports coaches are required to let their players make the decisions because they aren't on the court/field/track to do it themselves. Yet some are quite autocratic and harsh. You'll read many accounts where players found their coaches to be too harsh at the time, but in retrospect appreciated that they got the most out of them.

So this is all anecdote, but I think that you maybe conflating different management characteristics. Someone can be autocratic, harsh and unlikable, but use that to motivate their employees to act independently, and to be harsh with them (or terminate them) when they don't see enough creativity.

I don't know enough about Steve Jobs, but I've read that at Apple, they actually did multiple completely independent interface designs for some features precisely because they wanted to ensure that they got sufficient creative input and variability.

The fact that he was hard to work with may be something that you don't want to emulate, but I think that is because you probably can be a demanding manager without going overboard as he may have, not because he did not delegate enough.David Ohsiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14254812299720876449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1565037239206599239.post-15384442652928484172013-02-03T05:25:16.975-05:002013-02-03T05:25:16.975-05:00Need to take exception on Walter "inventing&q...Need to take exception on Walter "inventing" the DSO. I can tell you about my first 'scope...Hi Joel,

I can tell you about my first 'scope.

My name is Asadullah . I live in Pakistan.
I built my own first scope in 1964. It started with my having found a 2 inch round face tube in the scrap market which sold stuff discarded by the American base in Peshawar, the “Badaber” Comms base. (Peshawar, Cold War era)
I had a triode pentode tube which I used as a sweep oscillator and a bunch of 5k Allen-Bradley pots for vertical and horizontal shift. There was no front end amplifier. but at the lowest beam accelerating voltage I could look at and discern voltages in the mV range. It took me bit to find out how beam current is collected via the secondary emission from the phosphor. I had no books to guide me and am very proud of having discovered it on my own. Not much, I admit, but by a high school lad from a 3rd world country. I later modified it to look at modulation envelopes on my tiny QRP transmitter. ( Illegal as I had no license.)

So here is the story of my first 'scope.

I now own several Tek scopes and a lecroy. But the home brew was the best.

Cheers

Azzythehillbilly
mirasad314@hotmail.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1565037239206599239.post-26421916742262809932012-11-07T09:52:43.907-05:002012-11-07T09:52:43.907-05:00LostInConsulting - you are absolutely correct that...LostInConsulting - you are absolutely correct that listening and observation are important. When many people start as AE's they tend to want to show the customer every last feature, as opposed to the features the customers wants/needs at that moment. I know it was tough when I'd spend 3 weeks planning a killer demo just to find my customer would have been happy with a simple feature demonstration. I have discovered that the way you make a good demo into a great demo is to cut back what you say by about 75%.Joel Avruninhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07396200850597065455noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1565037239206599239.post-45912633095012045112012-11-07T09:47:00.205-05:002012-11-07T09:47:00.205-05:00Fantastic post Joel. I believe most FAE may reflect in your perfect description as I did(and their cars stuffed with instruments either).
I would say that technical knowledge is important but much more important qualities are communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with you interact with lots of different people and projects, every single day.
I believe that commercial elements are really important too, not just because you need to know if your product is really competitive in a specific application, but because you must be a fantastic listener and observer in order to detect any possible chance to say the right thing or show the right capability of your equipment at the right time. When you start, all your energy is concentrated in the technical preparation, but as you improve you knowledge and increase your confidence with exeprience on the technical part, they your mind can start focusing also on all the other aspects of the sale.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1565037239206599239.post-25231076830698089102012-10-19T17:55:51.794-04:002012-10-19T17:55:51.794-04:00Great job, I really like your chart of windows to ...Great job, I really like your chart of windows to non-windows comparison between the vendors.
